Sri Lanka marked a moment of immense national pride on 24th November 2025 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as Oceanpick, South Asia’s pioneering oceanic fish farm and a leader in responsible aquaculture, was recognized as a Top Finalist in the prestigious UNIDO ONE World Sustainability Awards under the Sustainable Supply Chains category. This global recognition is not only a milestone for Oceanpick, but also a powerful endorsement of Sri Lanka’s growing role as a hub for sustainable, world-class aquaculture.
Selected from over 2,000 registrations representing 172 UNIDO Member States, Oceanpick earned its place among the world’s best for its unwavering commitment to sustainability and leadership in building responsible food systems that nourish communities while protecting the planet. The announcement was made during the 21st Session of the UNIDO General Conference and Global Industry Summit, hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under the theme The Power of Investment and Partnerships to Accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals.
Oceanpick’s recognition highlights its pioneering status as South Asia’s first ocean-based barramundi farm. As a trailblazer in oceanic aquaculture, the company has set new benchmarks for responsible and verifiable practices, offering full transparency and traceability that allows consumers to clearly understand the origin and journey of their seafood. Its strong focus on livelihood generation in Trincomalee, promotion of inclusive economic growth, and commitment to gender equality further reinforce its alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Reflecting on the achievement, Founder and CEO of Oceanpick, Irfan Thassim, stated, “We are honored to represent Sri Lanka on this global stage. This recognition reminds us why we began our journey. For Oceanpick, sustainability was never an afterthought. It has always been the responsibility we chose to embrace. Building a better future for food starts with practices that respect the ocean, empower communities, and safeguard generations to come.”
The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, H.E. O.L. Ameerajwad, commented, “Oceanpick’s recognition on this global platform reflects Sri Lanka’s dedication to sustainable industry and innovation. It also highlights the growing synergy between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia, in line with Saudi Vision 2030, in championing responsible food production.”
Emphasizing the broader vision behind the awards, the UNIDO Director General noted, “Together, we can transform industries for a sustainable future. The UNIDO ONE World Sustainability Awards celebrate innovation, collaboration, and shared responsibility, proving that profitability and sustainability can go hand in hand.”
